PARENTS
Camp Is a Joint Venture
Our campers’ parents are critical members of our community. We understand and appreciate the commitment families make to the Kawanhee experience. The decision by parents to enroll a child at camp begins with a recognition that camp can impart value that cannot be replicated at home or at school. Having decided to take that leap of faith, parents are then called upon to make dear sacrifices, not only by covering the cost of camp, but also by forgoing their son’s good company for several weeks. We understand that enrolling a child in camp is a profoundly selfless and loving act.
It is for this reason that we consider families, a camper’s parents, siblings, grandparents and step-parents, to be part of our greater community. During a camper’s first two weeks of camp, we have a policy against phone calls and personal visits between a camper and his family members in preference for unlimited emails and letters. Phone calls and emails or letters with camp staff are always welcome as well. We find that this policy promotes a camper’s smooth adjustment to camp by developing a boy’s ability to draw support from those around him.
After two weeks, we welcome visits to camp by family members at any time, and phone calls between campers and parents are supported. We do not have designated visitation days, as we believe that family members should be made welcome when it is convenient for them to visit. If it is raining, or if a camper’s lodge is less than tidy, so be it. Parents deserve to see an unfiltered view of the camp experience.

SESSIONS
Session Offerings for 2026
Full Season: Kawanhee’s traditional program was built upon a 7-week stay. We believe that a full season at camp is most successful at allowing a boy to become fully immersed in all that the summer camp experience has to offer.
In addition to the Full Season option, we offer shorter stays of 26 days (Tumbledown Session) and 20 days (Skookumee Session). The Tumbledown Session gets its name from the iconic mountain in plain view from camp’s beach, one of the best day hikes in Maine. The Skookumee Session derives its name from a beach across the lake and a popular campsite for Kawanhee overnights. For many families, these shorter stays provide a fulsome camp experience while allowing for other activities during the summer and accommodating family vacations and school and sports schedules back home.
The Full Season, Tumbledown and Skookumee Sessions are available to any camper aged 7 to 15.
For older guys, 16 and 17 years of age, the Leadership Training Program is the appropriate choice. Leadership Training I is for 16 and 17 year-olds in their first year of the Leadership Training Program. Leadership Training II is intended for returning 17 year-olds who have participated in Leadership Training I as 16 year-olds.
For first-time campers aged 7 to 11 who may not feel ready for a camp experience of 3 weeks or more, we also offer the Trailblazer Session of two weeks’ duration. There are two Trailblazer Sessions during the summer, and enrollment is strictly limited in both. The goal of this offering is to address the particular interests and needs of this group by intentionally nurturing and guiding these boys to be comfortable in the camp environment. Trailblazer campers are fully integrated into the larger camp community. They attend camp gatherings, participate in all-camp competitions and other activities, and take meals in the dining hall with the rest of the Kawanhee community.

Health & Safety
HEALTH & SAFETY
Taking Care
The health and safety of Kawanhee’s campers is our paramount concern. We have a full time Maine-licensed RN on staff and available at all times, as well as an arrangement with a local pediatric practice when a doctor’s services are necessary. Kawanhee has an infirmary where the camp nurse resides and where there are beds available for boys who are ill or needing some rest. Every staff member at Kawanhee is trained in first aid and CPR and in specific activities, (wilderness living, trips and waterfront, for example), further training is required. Kawanhee offers these trainings each summer during the week prior to the start of camp. Our accreditation requires that we meet certain safety standards and Kawanhee staff exceeds or meets these standards in their training.
Food & Facilities
FOOD & FACILITIES
Nourishing & Rustic
Every week is a cookout with Hamburgers and Hot dogs, pasta Salads and brownies! Delicious vegetarian options are always available! The kitchen staff works with camper’s families to offer gluten-free and allergy accommodating meals. Healthy snacks and beverages are available in the evenings.
Camp Kawanhee loves to offer a taste of Maine to everyone during the summer season ~ perhaps it is a lobster roll, red hot dog in a toasted bun, warm blueberry cake or a whoopie pie. On July 4th, each lodge will get Kawanhee’s famous 4th of July Cake to share!
Chef Bailey Scott has worked in the Kawanhee kitchen since 2006. She brings lots of experience and excitement to the dining hall. Together, with the kitchen crew, she looks forward to another season in Weld at Camp Kawanhee!
Camp Mom
CAMP MOM
Supportive and Sure-Footed
We’re thrilled to welcome Therese Bonasera back for her fourth summer as Camp Kawanhee’s beloved Camp Mom. Therese brings warmth, energy, and a steady presence to camp life—qualities that make her a favorite among both campers and parents. Her compassion and attentiveness help new campers settle in with ease, while her calm confidence supports boys through the ups and downs of camp life.
Parents appreciate Therese’s thoughtful communication and her reassuring updates, knowing their sons are in caring hands. Around camp, she’s often seen sharing a laugh with the boys in the dining hall, cheering them on at activities, or offering a listening ear (and a snack) when someone needs a moment of comfort. Therese’s deep understanding of the Kawanhee experience and her genuine care for every camper help create the sense of family that makes Kawanhee so special.
Therese’s professional background is in Early Childhood Education. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Florida in 2004 and has worked at preschools in both Sweden and Sarasota, Florida. In each of these settings, she focused on supporting children’s development and maintaining strong, open communication with parents and families. Therese is excited to bring these experiences to Camp Kawanhee, where she continues to support campers and families with the same warmth, empathy, and professionalism that define her work.
