An Off-Season Camp Experience in Puerto Rico

Beginning in 2015, Camp Kawanhee has offered a week-long winter program in Jayuya, located in the central mountains of Puerto Rico.  Under the able leadership of several of our Puerto Rican counselors, participants between twelve and seventeen years of age can join their camp friends for a week of wilderness and cultural experiences along with Spanish language immersion.  Campers have opportunities to learn eco-education, sustainable agriculture, construction, cooking and art. The Tabonuco campus, consisting of rustic cabins, a dining hall and a covered activity center, sustained major damage during Hurricane Maria.  Thanks to generous donors and volunteers on the ground in Jayuya, Camp Tabonuco’s facilities have been resurrected. In addition to the annual program for older Kawanhee campers, the plan going forward is to increase the offerings available to the people of Puerto Rico.
